Natural Extracts That Improve Immunity

- Feb 21, 2020-

"For people with poor immune function, such as the elderly, pregnant women or people with liver and kidney dysfunction, their disease progresses quickly and gets more severe if infected by new coronavirus" according to the <Rapid Guidelines For the Diagnosis And Treatment of New Coronavirus Pneumonia> formulated by the expert group of The Tongji Hospital. In other words, under the same conditions, individuals with strong immunity are less likely to be infected by the virus.

And besides vitamin minerals, what other natural ingredients play a role in immune health?

01 Echinacea

Echinacea, also known as echinacea, has been shown ina growing body of research to help prevent and treat upper respiratory infections caused by the cold and flu. However, one of the major problems faced by echinacea in clinical application is that there are too many sources and types of echinacea preparations commonly used. For example, there are currently three main species used: Echinacea purpurea, Echinacea augustifolia and Echinacenpallida, and they vary from root to leaf to flower. At the same time, there are different ways to use, you can use dry roots, dry leaves, fresh juice and so on.
A comprehensive analysis published in <The Lancet> in 2007 showed echinacea reduced the risk of the common cold by 60 percent; The university of Connecticut analyzed the results of 14 studies. One study found that echinacea combined with vitamin C reduced the incidence of cold symptoms by 86 percent and 65 percent when used alone. In a large study published in 2012, echinacea reduced the duration of the common cold by 26 percent and the number of recurrences by 60 percent. The study was a gold standard randomized, double-blind, parallel-controlled study of 755 patients.

02 Black elderberry

European elderberry Black elderberry, also known as Black elderberry, is a kind of berry, mainly originated in Europe, rich in flavonoids, which are also active ingredients for antiviral effect.Human studies have shown that elderberry can reduce the duration of flu and reduce symptoms.A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial in 2016 assessed the effect of an anthocyanin-standard elderberry extract on passengers on long-haul international flights who were particularly susceptible to illness. The results showed elderberry extract reduced the infection rate to less than 35 percent, reduced the number of colds by a third, and significantly reduced the severity of all three colds.

03 Allicin

Allicin, a thiosulfinate derived from garlic, has strong antibacterial activity as well as potential medicinal benefits, which can be used to boost immunity.
A 2016 randomized, double-blind controlled study from the university of Florida showed that 90 days of garlic extract supplementation reduced the duration of colds and flu by 61 percent, reduced cold or flu symptoms by 21 percent, and reduced the number of sick days lost by 58 percent.Garlic supplements also enhance the function of immune cells, especially NK and gamma-delta T cells.

04 Broccoli

Broccoli is a variety of brassica oleracea in the cruciferous family, known as the "crown of vegetables."The isothiocyanates in broccoli are mainly Sulforaphane (1- isothiocyanate -4- methyl-butane, Sulforaphane,SF). They are the most active isothiocyanates and are considered to be the strongest anticancer compounds found in vegetables.
In 2015, a study showed that both high and low doses of sulforaphane significantly increased the thymus index and spleen index reduced by cyclophosphamide (Cy), suggesting that sulforaphane had a protective effect on Cy inhibited immune organs and promoted the recovery to normal. In this study, peritoneal macrophage phagocytosis was selected as an indicator of non-specific immune function, hemolysin test was used as an indicator of specific humoral immunity, and lymphocyte transformation was used as an indicator of cellular immunity to observe the regulatory effect of two different doses of sulforaphane on the immune function of mouse immunosuppression model. The results indicated that both high and low doses of sulforaphane could increase the percentage and index of macrophage phagocytosis and promote the formation of hemolysin, while high doses of sulforaphane could significantly stimulate the transformation of lymphocytes. The immunoexcitability of sulforaphane in high dose was strong, while the immunoexcitability of sulforaphane in low dose group was relatively weak.

05 Curcumin

Turmeric is a ginger plant and an important herb in the ayurvedic system of India. It has been used for more than 5,000 years to treat common ailments such as skin, lung, gastrointestinal problems, pain, wounds, liver damage, joint pain and inflammation.Turmeric has a variety of health benefits mainly due to the plant compound curcumin, which has super antioxidant properties and anti-inflammatory properties.
Studies have shown that curcumin is a powerful immune regulator that regulates the activity of T cells, which are responsible for cell-mediated immunity. In fact, curcumin has a wide range of immunoregulatory activities that affect T cells, macrophages, neutrophils, natural killer cells, and dendritic cells. In addition to these activities of curcumin, the anti-inflammatory activity of curcumin also affects and downregulates pro-inflammatory molecules such as NFkB, tumor necrosis factor (TNF), interleukin, and other chemokines.

Nowadays, the threat to people's immune system is stronger than ever before, so the market growth of immune health products is bound to be very fast in the future, and the growth of immune health products will be mainly in the form of functional food and beverage.
